Here’s to Our Apprentice, Nathan!
Our awesome apprentice, Nathan, has been here a year this month, how time flies when you’re having fun, right?
To celebrate Nathan, and the growth of our team here at Sureworks, we thought we’d ask Nathan how an apprenticeship has been beneficial to him and what advice he’d give to apprentices about to start.
We’ll give you our two cents as a business owner too because having an apprentice has been a game-changer for us and it may be for you…
What made you chose an apprenticeship, Nathan?
“I chose to do an apprenticeship because I liked the idea of learning on the job and earning rather than being stuck inside a college room.“
What made us choose to hire an apprentice?
We are all about bringing positive change to our industry. Whether that’s through our GivingBack Scheme, the service we provide for clients, or bringing talented young people, like Nathan, into the industry.
What two things would you tell yourself, this time last year, Nathan?
“The first thing I would tell myself is to not be afraid to ask questions because they know I’m learning and I won’t be sure about everything. Secondly, is to not give up and to keep trying whenever I am struggling.”
What two things would we tell businesses thinking of hiring an apprentice?
For starters, it’s so rewarding. Not only are you helping your apprentice grow and mold their career but your business gets a completely fresh perspective. It’s the opportunity to have a member of staff with an open mind look at your business and it helps you identify what you do well and where you can improve.
And secondly, it gives the team such a hunger for growth and development. Your apprentice will be learning and growing all the time, you’ll be surprised about the positive impact that has on the rest of the team.
What’s your favourite part about being an apprentice for Sureworks, Nathan?
“My favourite part about working for Sureworks is how enjoyable it is, as working is much better when you can enjoy it.”
What’s our favourite part about having an apprentice on the team?
The new opportunities that are now available for Nathan, the team, and our business. It’s given us new ideas for growth, development, staff retention, and highlighted to us why we’re different.
What’s your best achievement (in a nutshell) from the past year, Nathan?
“I would say my best achievement from the past year is how well I have come on, from the start of the year I could barely do anything but now I feel like I do quite a lot.”
What has been the most beneficial aspect of having an apprentice as part of the team?
By far and away seeing Nathan’s growth as an employee. His confidence and skill level have developed massively since he started and he is an important, and highly valued, member of our Sureworks’ team.
What’s your one tip for someone starting an apprenticeship?
“To always ask when you’re struggling because otherwise, you won’t learn as well.”
What’s our one tip for a business hiring an apprentice?
Be prepared to learn from your apprentice as they learn from you. They will highlight areas of your business you have perhaps not thought about. They will also show you parts you’re doing well and probably taking for granted.
What will you be doing next year, Nathan?
“Next year I will continue to work hard and progress as much as possible. If I progress as much as I have done this past year in 2021, then I’m sure I will do Sureworks proud.“
What plans do we have for Nathan next year?
To continue to support his growth and development, making sure he receives the best training and guidance, whilst also being supported with personal development and having fun!
How have Sureworks helped in your personal development, Nathan?
“The biggest thing Sureworks has helped me with is my personal development and being confident with everything I do.”
How have we supported Nathan’s personal development here at Sureworks?
